چکیده

We present an archaeological study of hunter-gatherer home ranges on the basis of two lines of evidence. Firstly, we discuss information related to the mobility of individuals, which was approached by stable isotope studies. Secondly, we present data related to the transport and discard of artefacts, since the distribution of these itemsmay be determined by the movement of people. Our main goal is to integrate these two lines of research in the analysis of an archaeological case from southern Patagonia (Argentina and Chile, South America), that involves the hinterland, the Atlantic coast and the Strait of Magellan. Stable Isotopes and Archaeology in Southern South America. Hunter-Gatherers, Pastoralism and Agriculture: An Introduction

The introduction of stable isotopes in archaeological research beginning in the 1970s produced a revolution in the ways that several key anthropological issues were studied, including early hominin subsistence, hunter-gatherer spatial organisation, origins and history of farming and pastoralist societies, migrations, and intraand inter-group social differentiation. As a tool suited for the quan...

Paleogenomic Evidence for Multi-generational Mixing between Neolithic Farmers and Mesolithic Hunter-Gatherers in the Lower Danube Basin

The transition from hunting and gathering to farming involved profound cultural and technological changes. In Western and Central Europe, these changes occurred rapidly and synchronously after the arrival of early farmers of Anatolian origin [1-3], who largely replaced the local Mesolithic hunter-gatherers [1, 4-6]. Further east, in the Baltic region, the transition was gradual, with little or ...

Carbondale 15 . Delayed - Return Hunter - Gatherers in Africa ? Historic Perspectives

The material characteristics and past distribution of delayed return hunter-gatherers in Africa are investigated through ethnoarchae ological research among the Okiek and an archaeological study of the Kansyore. We recognize groups with delays in return but without hier archy as moderate delayed-return hlmter-gatherers. The Ownership Model, developed here, allows identification of such group...

Lactase Persistence Alleles Reveal Partial East African Ancestry of Southern African Khoe Pastoralists

The ability to digest milk into adulthood, lactase persistence (LP), as well as specific genetic variants associated with LP, is heterogeneously distributed in global populations. These variants were most likely targets of selection when some populations converted from hunter-gatherer to pastoralist or farming lifestyles. Specific LP polymorphisms are associated with particular geographic regio...

Psychoactive plants and southern African hunter-gatherers: a review of the evidence

It is widely accepted that Bushman shamans enter into altered states of consciousness and that their experiences of such states are intimately bound up with the imagery represented in southern African rock art. Most accounts of contemporary trance performances by Kalahari Bushmen emphasise that such states are attained in ways that exclude the use of psychoactive plants. This paper reviews the ...
